Lake Rocotuyoc & Congelada

Tucked away inside Huascarán National Park, the Rocotuyoc and Congelada lagoons make up one of the finest easy-to-moderate day excursions available from Huaraz, and a favourite choice for acclimatization ahead of longer treks such as Santa Cruz.

The day begins with a scenic drive north through the Callejón de Huaylas to the village of Marcára, continuing east into the lands of the Vicos community and the Quebrada Honda (Paqcharuri ravine). Along the way, the snow-capped summits of Copa, Vallunaraju and Akilpo come into view, and the route pauses at the Paqcharuri waterfall before reaching the trailhead.

From there, a short and gentle walk leads to Laguna Rocotuyoc (approximately 4,500 m / 14,760 ft), a striking turquoise glacial lake bordered by native queñual (Polylepis) woodland. A further 30 to 60 minutes along the lakeshore brings visitors to Laguna Congelada (approximately 4,520–4,550 m / 14,830–14,930 ft), set at the foot of the retreating tongue of the Paccharaju Glacier, beneath the peak of Nevado Paccharaju (5,745 m). Locally known as the “Frozen Lagoon,” Congelada takes its name from the chunks of glacial ice that break away and drift across its surface — a striking, ever-changing sight that offers a direct glimpse of the glacier in retreat.

Please note that, for environmental protection, access to the water’s edge nearest the ice has recently been restricted by fencing, which may limit photo angles at close range.

This is a full-day tour, typically departing Huaraz between 8:30 and 9:00 am and returning by around 5:30 pm. While the walking sections are short and largely flat, the high altitude makes this an easy-to-moderate outing overall, and prior acclimatization is recommended. Warm layers, sun protection and sturdy footwear are essential, as weather at this elevation can change quickly.
