Alpamayo Base Camp Trek: Vaquería to Hualcayán — 9 or 10 Days

The Cordillera Blanca holds the greatest concentration of tropical-zone glaciers on earth — more than fifty peaks above 5700m, twenty of them over 6000m. This trek weaves from Vaquería to Hualcayán through its heart, crossing high passes into wildly varied valleys.

Its focal point is the famous Alpamayo pyramid, once voted the most beautiful mountain in the world, seen in close-up from Laguna Jancarurish. It is an exciting shorter version of our classic 11–13 day Complete Circuit of Alpamayo, beginning with two easier days.

Essential Trekking Notes & Rules

Grading

We grade this trek Hard: several high passes and some long hard days follow two easier starting days. The altitude makes it more demanding than a similar trek lower down. You need to be well acclimatised, have good fitness, hike up to 7 to 9 hour days, and manage steep climbs and descents. Trails are unmaintained dirt paths, uneven underfoot.

9 or 10 Day Option

The 10-day version is more relaxed, with an extra day at the camp near Alpamayo to admire the mountains, hike towards Alpamayo Base Camp, or rest and recover.

Special Interest — Supporting Local Communities

Starting from Vaquería gives work to donkey drivers from the villages of Colcabamba and Vaquería, who by local rules may only work on treks beginning there. This income is vital to these families and helps them educate their children.

Access Roads

Access roads to and from the trek are generally unpaved mountain roads and can be bumpy, so road travel times are slower than the distance suggests.
