About this day
A relaxed day stitching together several sides of the valley. First the pre-Inca ruins of Wilcahuaín just outside Huaraz, then a turn into the Cordillera Negra to the lookout of El Mirador for the full sweep of the white range. We stop at the memorial to Yungay, the town buried with almost all its 20,000 people by the avalanche off Huascarán on 31 May 1970 — now gardens and monuments. The day ends in Caraz and its bustling market, with a picnic on the green Plaza de Armas. Note: cultural sites around Huaraz close on Mondays.
