Vallunaraju offers ice walls and varied terrain ideal for revising technique and crevasse rescue, plus a summit for acclimatisation and strength — the perfect preparation for Alpamayo’s steep, technical ice.

Is Alpamayo suitable for beginners?

No. Alpamayo is graded D, steep and technical, with 55–85° pitches. You must be experienced on steep ice with screws, anchors and rappel — which the Vallunaraju phase helps consolidate.

How is acclimatisation handled?

The programme starts with three Huaraz day hikes to progressively higher altitudes before Vallunaraju, and the Vallunaraju climb itself adds acclimatisation before Alpamayo.

Alpamayo demands several hours of continuous front-pointing on two technical axes on 55–65° slopes (up to 80°), with confident use of screws, stakes, anchors and rappel — not for beginners. The programme opens with three Huaraz acclimatisation hikes, then ice practice and a Vallunaraju summit before the main objective.

Essential Trekking Notes & Rules

Acclimatisation

This programme includes three days of Huaraz acclimatisation hikes (to around 4200–4560m) before departing for Vallunaraju. You sleep and climb above 5000m, so good acclimatisation is essential.

Carrying Gear

You carry your own personal gear from the vehicle up to camp on Vallunaraju and from Base Camp to High Camp on Alpamayo; our crew carry tents, food and equipment.

Extra Days

One or two extra days can be added — an extra Huaraz acclimatisation day or a reserve day on Alpamayo.

Changing Mountain Conditions

Routes and conditions change year to year and even month to month as glaciers recede, so our descriptions are general only and may differ on the day.
