Three Climbs in the Ishinca Valley (Urus, Ishinca, Tocllaraju) — 7 Days

From a single base in the beautiful Ishinca Valley we climb three peaks: the non-technical Urus (5495m) and Ishinca (5530m) as warm-ups, building to the 6034m Tocllaraju — perhaps your first 6000m summit.

It is a complete progression: acclimatise and gain strength on the first two peaks, then take on the steeper, more technical Tocllaraju.

Two warm-ups and a 6000m summit

  • Peaks: Urus 5495m, Ishinca 5530m, Tocllaraju 6034m
  • Grade: up to D (Hard) on Tocllaraju
  • Duration: 7 days
  • Tocllaraju: steep, technical sections
  • Guiding: local UIAGM guides

Urus and Ishinca are ideal non-technical warm-ups; Tocllaraju is steeper and technical, with crevasses, snow bridges and a steep, exposed bergschrund near the summit, and is not suitable for climbers without good basic skills. The progression makes it an excellent route to a first 6000m peak.

Essential Trekking Notes & Rules

Acclimatisation

Being well acclimatised is especially important for a 6000m peak. We recommend a trek of at least 4 days before the climbing trip; we can organise one for you.

Carrying Gear

Donkeys carry equipment to Ishinca Base Camp, but you carry your own personal and climbing gear up to Tocllaraju Morena Camp; porters carry tents, rope, food and cooking equipment.

Your Guide

The guide in charge of your climb is one of our local, experienced and professional UIAGM International Mountain Guides.

Changing Mountain Conditions

Routes and conditions change year to year and even month to month as glaciers recede, so our descriptions are general only and may differ on the day. If reports from previous groups indicate unstable or dangerous conditions, we may recommend an alternative climb. The final decision on safety rests with your Peruvian Andes Adventures guide.
