Huascarán Sur Climb 6768m — 6 or 7 Days
Huascarán (6768m) is the highest mountain in Peru and the highest anywhere in the tropics — the principal objective of many climbers who visit the Cordillera Blanca.
Once considered straightforward, glacier change has made it more crevassed and technical, and combined with the altitude it is now a very physically demanding climb, not suitable for beginners.

- Not for beginners
Large crevasses, steep hard-ice sections and the serac-threatened “Garganta” between High Camps demand experience on steep ice with screws, stakes, anchors and rappel, plus rescue training. You must be very well acclimatised and strong, and ready with a “Plan B” if conditions are unsafe.
Essential Trekking Notes & Rules
Acclimatisation
You spend four nights sleeping above 5000m, which is very demanding. We recommend at least a 4-day acclimatisation trek followed by a 4-day climb of Pisco (5750m) before Huascarán.
Safety — the Garganta
The route between High Camp 1 and High Camp 2 (the “caneleta” and traverse) is very exposed to overhanging seracs and ice fall. We move through it early and fast; if there is serious ice-fall risk the guide may turn the group back, and that decision must be respected.
Reserve Day
Huascarán can be climbed in 6 days in good conditions; a 7th reserve day for bad weather or rest can be booked and paid in advance.

Changing Mountain Conditions
Routes and conditions change year to year and even month to month as glaciers recede, so our descriptions are general only and may differ on the day. If reports from previous groups indicate unstable or dangerous conditions, we may recommend an alternative climb. The final decision on safety rests with your Peruvian Andes Adventures guide.
