The five-day course on Vallunaraju — where Peru’s own mountain guides train — is tailored to your level and goals, covering everything from crampon and ice-axe technique to crevasse rescue and lead climbing. You then put the skills to use on two follow-up summits, finishing ready to progress to bigger objectives.

Tailored Course Levels
The instruction course is tailored from a Beginners course (an ideal introduction to mountaineering) through Intermediate (advanced rescue, ice and lead climbing) to Advanced (for experienced climbers leading on serious terrain). Content is agreed with you and your guide.
Choice of Follow-Up Summits
After the course you choose your summits: the Twin Peaks Adventure (Pisco 5753m & Yanapaccha 5460m, 12 days), the 6000m Challenge (Ishinca 5530m & Tocllaraju 6034m, 12 days) or a Chopicalqui Expedition (with Yanapaccha, 13 days). The itinerary shown is the Twin Peaks option.
Acclimatisation
You must already be well acclimatised before the course. We recommend a trek of at least 4 to 6 days, or day hikes from Huaraz, beforehand.

You carry all your gear up the steep approach.
A 1½ hour drive to the Llaca Valley (4470m), then a steep 3 to 4 hour climb carrying all our gear up a ridge to Morena Camp (5000m), with magnificent views of Ocshapalca, Huaraz and the Cordillera Negra. An afternoon introduction to equipment and knots.
