Vallunaraju Climb (5686m) — 2 Days

Vallunaraju (5686m) is one of the few Cordillera Blanca peaks that can be climbed from Huaraz in just two days. A moderately hard mountaineering adventure with great views in every direction, it is suitable for novices and a worthwhile outing for experienced climbers — and an ideal warm-up for 6000m or technical peaks.

The normal route is non-technical apart from the final 60m to the summit, which is steep and feels exposed; your guide assists here and you are always safe.

A 5686m summit in two days from Huaraz

  • Grade: AD- — beginner-suitable
  • Duration: 2 days
  • Summit: 5686m
  • Final 60m: steep and exposed
  • Ideal warm-up for 6000m peaks

Despite the short timing, this is graded Hard: the altitude and the steep, gear-laden hike up to camp make it demanding. You go from Huaraz (3090m) straight to Morena Camp (around 5000m), so you must already be well acclimatised — we recommend a 4 to 6 day trek beforehand. For the fit, strong and well-prepared, it is a great, challenging adventure.

Expedition Logistics

Essential Trekking Notes & Rules

Carrying Your Gear

You must carry all equipment from the vehicle up to camp, on a steep, rocky dirt trail — a demanding climb for the first two hours. Our crew carry tents, food and equipment and as much of your climbing gear as they can, but you carry your own personal gear and need a large enough pack. A private porter can be hired.

Grading

We classify this programme as Hard: although the peak is beginner-suitable, the 5686m altitude and the steep, tough hike to camp while carrying gear make it demanding. You should not consider it unless you have good fitness and endurance and are generally strong.

Acclimatisation

You go from Huaraz (3090m) direct to Morena Camp (around 5000–5130m), a gain of roughly 2040m in a single day, so you must already be well acclimatised. We recommend a trek of at least 4 to 6 days beforehand, and can organise one if you have not arranged your own.

Physiological & Operational Checkpoint

A steep, demanding climb carrying all your gear; the first two hours are tough.

A 1½ hour drive eastwards on a dirt road to the Llaca Valley (4470m). We shoulder our packs and climb steeply up a ridge for 3 to 4 hours to Morena Camp (around 5000m), carrying all our equipment as donkeys cannot follow. The first two hours are tough and steep before the route eases, with amazing views of Ocshapalca, Huaraz and the Cordillera Negra.
