Alpamayo & Huascarán Expedition — 23 Days

A comprehensive three-week expedition that builds, step by step, towards two of Peru’s great summits: the technical pyramid of Alpamayo (5947m) and Huascarán Sur (6768m), the highest mountain in the country.

The programme opens with acclimatisation hikes around Huaraz, a trek into the Quillqueyhuanca Valley and an ascent of the non-technical Maparaju (5350m) for height and strength, with rest days in Huaraz between each climb.

Expedition Logistics

Essential Trekking Notes & Rules

Arrival, Acclimatisation & Rest Days

The expedition begins with arrival in Huaraz (3090m) and three acclimatisation hikes — to the Wilkawain ruins (3450m), Laguna Urus (4400m) and Laguna Ahuac (4560m). Full rest days in Huaraz are scheduled before the Alpamayo climb and again before the Huascarán climb to let the body recover from high altitude.

Fitness & Climbing Experience

You must carry your own personal gear up to the mountain camps, so a large enough pack and very good fitness are essential. Both Alpamayo and Huascarán have steep, technical sections and are not suitable for beginner climbers.

Changing Mountain Conditions

Routes and conditions change year to year. Huascarán in particular can be heavily crevassed and, in some years and conditions, subject to serac fall and avalanche risk. If reports indicate unstable conditions, we will recommend an alternative climb for safety.

Optional Reserve Days

Huascarán can be climbed in 6 days in good conditions; an extra reserve day for bad weather or rest can be booked and paid in advance so the guide and crew are confirmed.
