About this day
Apart from the local people, you will likely have this trail to yourself. The walk to the lake is gradual and never steep — except the last twenty minutes, scrambling over a moraine wall to reach the water at 4250m. Lake Shallap sits at the foot of San Juan, Tumarinaraju and Huantsan Grande, fed by the glaciers above. It is a long day, best kept for once you have started to acclimatise and are fit.
