5753mThe Santa Cruz – Ulta trek crosses Punta Unión (4750m) and Punta Yanayacu (4850m) and camps high on the Avalancha plateau — ideal preparation for Pisco. Pisco is beginner-suitable but physically demanding at 5750m, with a steep, loose approach to Morena Camp where you carry your own gear.
The trek is moderate to hard, crossing two high passes with sustained climbs and long descents. Pisco is medium to hard — beginner-suitable but physically demanding at 5750m. A rest day in Huaraz separates the trek and the climb (it can be omitted if you are short of time).
The two high passes and the high last camp on the trek make it excellent acclimatisation for Pisco.

We drive the Callejón de Huaylas to Caraz and up to Cashapampa (2900m), with a first view of Nevado Santa Cruz. A steady ascent follows the river through a steep, hot gorge before the valley opens to puna grassland and camp at Llamacorral (3750m).
