6034mThe Santa Cruz trek provides a good acclimatisation base for the Three Peaks programme. Urus and Ishinca are ideal non-technical warm-ups; Tocllaraju is steeper and technical with an exposed bergschrund, not suitable for climbers without good basic skills.
The Santa Cruz – Llanganuco trek (4 days) is followed by a rest day in Huaraz and seven days in the Ishinca Valley climbing Urus, Ishinca and Tocllaraju, with a rest day between the warm-up peaks and the 6000m climb.
Being well acclimatised is especially important for a 6000m peak; the Santa Cruz trek provides a good base. Donkeys carry gear to Ishinca Base Camp, but you carry your own up to Tocllaraju Morena Camp.

Access roads to and from the mountains are generally unpaved and can be bumpy, so road travel times are slower than the distance suggests.
