Peru family treks — Cordillera Blanca & Huayhuash

Are you a family with active, adventurous children or teenagers? We organise safe, fully supported treks for families, and our crews love having young people on the trail with them. We talk through your children's ages, their hiking experience and how far they can comfortably walk, then suggest routes that fit — and we make sure everyone has FUN.

Tailored to your children

A route built around young explorers

  • Matched to your children: we talk through each child's age, fitness and hiking experience, then suggest a trek that fits them — never the other way round.
  • Light on your backs: our donkeys carry the heavy loads, so parents and youngsters walk with just a daypack.

What an adult calls an easy hike can be moderate to hard for younger people, especially at altitude — so we grade our treks with children in mind. We are flexible: we will adjust an itinerary or tailor-make a route entirely, so the mountains stay safe and the days stay fun.

Horses can be arranged for younger children to ride, with a dedicated horse handler alongside them the whole way to keep them safe over the steeper passes.

When there are very young children along, extra porters can come too — to help parents carry the daypacks, or to carry a little one in a child-carrier backpack. Our crew looks after the details so the family can simply enjoy the walk.

Olleros to Chavin: a three-day trek with llamas

The Olleros to Chavin three-day trek is a wonderful little family trip. We can bring along some llamas with the pack animals — the children always love them — and on the last day you explore the ruins of Chavin de Huantar, a maze of underground rooms and passages that kids find thrilling.

Some treks that work well for families

Treks marked as good for teenagers often suit younger children too — just ask, and we can arrange extra support. Shorter days, gentler altitude gains and comfortable camps: a good place to start, and we are always happy to tailor a route to what your family would love to do.

What families tell us afterwards

"Each member of the crew was absolutely terrific at their job. The trek was certainly not too easy, but we completed it without any major difficulties, and the 13-day option was just perfect for our family. Thank you for your guidance from the very start of the planning stages."

Jennifer (Canada)

Cordillera Huayhuash, 13 days — two teenagers, 12 & 14

"The food was excellent, and more than we expected — pizza, trout and other great meals on the walk. Having horses for our children the whole time was exactly what we needed to complete the trek. Nestor and the team kept a very manageable, steady pace, with plenty of time to enjoy the views."

Andrew (South Africa)

Santa Cruz–Ulta, 7 days — two children, 9 & 11

"The team was well organised and helpful. Anne provided valuable guidance as we planned the trip. Eli was patient and attentive, looked out for the slower hikers among us and shared all sorts of information about our surroundings."
