Huayhuash Laguna Jahuacocha Trek
For those with limited time who would like to enjoy the grandeur of the massive Cordillera Huayhuash peaks, we offer a short trek crossing a majestic high mountain pass close to the biggest mountains in the Huayhuash then camping one or two nights at beautiful Laguna Jahuacocha.
Timing: 5 days Huaraz to Huaraz (can be 4 days)
Grade: Moderate to Hard
Horse Trek Option available – for relaxing Cordillera Huayhuash holiday
This is a physically demanding high altitude trek with a “stiff” climb to the top of a high pass at 4750m and a long descent down the other side of the pass on day 03 of the trek. A good level of physical fitness is required.
We can offer a horse trek option for those who would like to experience the majesty of the Cordillera Huayhuash but who feel they may struggle with the high passes.
This short trek and stunning location at Laguna Jahuacocha is a great place to celebrate a special occasion – a special birthday, anniversary or honeymoon. Our crew will make sure that you have a happy time and go home with very special memories.
Day 1: We start with a 4 to 4.5 hour drive to the village of Llamac (3300m) where we set up our first nights camp. In the afternoon we hike to the top of a hill with a low pass from where we have lovely views into the next valley and the mountain village of Mahuay. This afternoon hike is a valuable acclimatisation day
Day 2: We walk gradually up the Quebrada Llamac valley along the course of the Rio Llamac, passing through the small villages of Pocpa and Pallca. In 2005 a new dirt road between Llamac and Quartelhuain was completed, and for much of the way we follow this rarely-used road; the scenery is so interesting & beautiful that the road is barely noticed anyway. During the hike we start to glimpse the snowy tops of the mountains. After about 7 hours relaxing hiking we arrive at camp in a grassy open field at Quartelhuain (4200m)
Day 3: We make a long traversing ascent to the Rondoy Pass (4750m) from where there are breathtaking close views of the nearby highest Huayhuash peaks. Descend past a glacial lake, Solteracocha, and then on to the beautiful Laguna Jahuacocha and our camp (4150m). A hard day – 7 hours
Day 4: We stay extra day at Laguna Jahuacocha. Day hike up to the Yaucha Pass to take a look at the western side of the Cordillera Huayhuash range or head up the Quebrada Rasac valley to a glacial lake. Or you could enjoy a rest day in the beautiful setting or maybe try trout fishing
Day 5: The final pass Pampa Llamac 4500m and a long descent to Llamac. 5½ hours. Return to Huaraz in our private van
